Tensions Surge in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh as Protests Escalate Over Proposed Ethanol Plant

Violence escalates in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh as protests against a proposed 40 MW ethanol plant intensify. Internet services have been suspended and multiple vehicles torched as residents voice environmental concerns. Authorities warn of rising tensions amid the months-long standoff.

Tensions in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district intensified this week as sustained protests against a proposed ethanol factory turned increasingly violent, prompting authorities to suspend internet services and heighten security across the region. Demonstrations, ongoing since September 2024, surged dramatically over the past two days, with protestors setting fire to and vandalizing at least 16 vehicles, according to officials familiar with the situation.

The unrest centers on a project by Dune Ethanol Private Limited, which is developing a 40-megawatt ethanol facility across 45 acres of land. While the company positions the plant as part of India’s expanding biofuel infrastructure, local residents have raised strong objections, expressing fears that the facility could lead to significant environmental degradation and increased pollution in surrounding communities.

What began months ago as a largely peaceful campaign has now entered a volatile phase, leaving district authorities on alert as they work to contain the spread of violence. The administration’s decision to impose an internet shutdown reflects growing concern over coordination among agitators and the rapid dissemination of inflammatory content.

Officials have appealed for calm, urging residents to allow the regulatory process and environmental assessments to take their course. However, with demonstrations intensifying and mistrust deepening between locals and project proponents, Hanumangarh remains on edge.

As pressure builds on the administration to restore order, the escalation underscores a broader challenge across India—balancing industrial expansion with community consent and environmental safeguarding. The coming days are likely to determine whether dialogue can be restored or whether the region will face further unrest over the contentious project.
